In his bestseller ‘Outliers: The Story of Success’, Malcolm Gladwell confirmed “Those three things – autonomy, complexity, and a connection between effort and reward – are, most people agree, the three qualities that work has to have if it is to be satisfying… It’s whether our work fulfills us.”
These are undoubtedly what we’re all looking to achieve and to be provided within our role and by our business?
So for business owners, these 3 things are worth your reflection.
Complexity – are your people achieving their potential within their role and how do they feel they’re being challenged and developed? This includes a transparent, agreed and structured L&D program personalised and targeted to each individual.
Autonomy – is about finding the right management style and balance in direction, review and support; whether remotely or face-to-face. One that achieves the required performance whilst enabling the ‘headroom’ for creativity and satisfaction.
Reward – how well suited and clear is the recognition of people’s achievement of the necessary milestones and results, in combination with the rewards; and how best have they been structured to support and drive short and long-term results and retention.
