In recruitment, we’re constantly told to “get out of your comfort zone” — and absolutely, there’s value in stretching yourself. In fact, I did a LI post on it 10 months ago under the heading: “Do it because it’s FUN!’

But here’s a truth we don’t hear enough:
Your comfort zone is also where you perform at your best.

As a recruitment business owner or consultant, deliberately spending time each week in your comfort zone isn’t lazy — it’s smart. Here’s why:

???? It’s where execution happens.
When you’re operating with confidence and clarity, you’re sharper, more efficient, and better able to deliver results. This is where deals get done, relationships are nurtured, and pipelines are strengthened.

Harvard Business Review advises that high performers spend 70–80% of their time in roles that align with their core skills.

???? You build measurable momentum.
The comfort zone allows you to focus on clear, achievable objectives. Small wins here drive consistency, motivation, and confidence — the fuel for long-term growth.

According to a Gallup study, employees who use their strengths daily are 8% more productive and 15% less likely to experience burnout.

✅ You refine what already works.
Instead of chasing shiny new tactics, use this space to optimise proven systems. Whether it’s your sourcing strategy or client pitch, refining existing strengths compounds results.

Incremental improvements to existing processes (like outreach tactics, candidate pipelines, or follow-up techniques) often yield better ROI than chasing brand new strategies.

❌ Prevents burnout.
You can’t be in ‘growth mode’ 24/7. Intentional time in your comfort zone provides balance, helping you recharge and come back stronger when it’s time to stretch.

Constant stretch = cognitive fatigue. A study in the Journal of Applied Psychology shows that prolonged high-stress performance reduces decision quality and creativity — both critical in recruitment.

So, when you’re planning your week, don’t just schedule time to grow. Schedule time to consolidate. Your comfort zone isn’t your enemy — it’s your foundation and where you’re not hiding, but where you execute, optimise and recharge.

Do you allocate enough time to your ‘comfort zone’?
