2023 Wimbledon Singles winners
In business as in sport, there are fine margins that define those who are at the top of their ‘game’ and who excel within their field of expertise.
As highlighted by American psychologist Carol Dweck, Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, “The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.”
She states that success comes from having the right mindset rather than intelligence, talent or education. People with a fixed mindset believe that they’re born with certain intelligence, skills and abilities that cannot change.
Isn’t it true that it’s not just our abilities and talent that bring us success – but how resilient and determined we are and whether we approach our objectives and the associated challenges with a fixed or ‘growth’ mindset.
There were matches in this year’s Wimbledon tournament 2023, particularly towards the ‘business end’ of the competition, where sadly some very talented individuals failed to deliver to their potential at the crucial time, and thus fell short of what they could, perhaps should have achieved.
Our focus should therefore be on our continued growth and learning to build, not just our skills and knowledge of our craft (and life in general), but also our abilities to overcome adversity and achieve our potential.
In working with my clients at all levels within each business, my starting point is each person’s key drivers and motivators; because if there’s no link to these, then there’s little chance of gaining their ownership and the determination for success.
It’s with this ‘ownership’, aligned with developing their core determination and resilience through enhancing their technical skills and clarity of objectives, that enables each of these individuals and thus their businesses to achieve their full potential.
It was important to note that each of the various winners at Wimbledon 2023 across the weekend , as well as the ‘runners-up’, highlighted that they’d achieved what they had through the support and direction of their coaches.
Where have you reached out to for your development, perhaps in challenging times?
